Chapter 18

What Must I Do?

Appendix D
Age of Readiness
(at end of chapter)

God commands that we worship Him in Spirit and in truth. However, everyone has his own opinion concerning what constitutes worshipping God in this fashion. The first step, after becoming a Christian, involves joining a local church that preaches and teaches the word of God without changing it. Doing so enhances a person’s chances of scripturally worshipping God. Yet, too many people get the “cart before the horse.” Spiritually speaking, they try to run before they learn how to walk.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

All of the information in this book, and indeed all the books that have ever been written, will profit you nothing if you are not first a child of God. The person of salvation is the Lord Jesus Christ and Him alone.

This book covers the Bible from Genesis through the book of the Revelation and back again. The information provided may seem useful, but will not profit you if you have never been saved (Romans 10:9-13). In this final chapter, let us revisit the Church Age one more time. For a moment, forget all the confusion in the world, and gain the assurance (I Thessalonians 1:5) that you have this one issue settled. How does a person insure that heaven will be his home?

Almost anyone, when asked, will tell you that he desires to go to heaven when he dies. Many individuals assume that heaven will be their home as long as they try to be good people and live a good lives. Living a good life is a commendable endeavor, but certainly is not sufficient to earn a place in heaven. God gives four principles in the Bible that a person must understand and act upon in order to go to heaven.

First, you must understand . . . you are a sinner.

.Romans 3:22 ...for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Think about this: How many banks would you have to rob in order to comprehend that you are a bank robber? Only one, of course. The same principle holds true concerning sin. Committing even one sin should convince you that you are a sinner. For example, if you ever told a lie or simply disobeyed your parents as a child, you broke a biblical command and sinned. Therefore, you are a sinner.  Every person is a sinner. You must first understand and accept the fact that you are a sinner (Romans 5:12). The end of verse 22 refers to the fact that it does not matter whether one is a murder, prostitute or a “petty” sinner “for there is no difference...all have sinned.”

Second, you must understand . . . the penalty for being a sinner.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Wages are what a person has earned or deserves. Because of your personal sin, you have earned and deserve death. Death indicates a separation. There are two types of death. These are the physical death (the separation of the soul from the body) and the spiritual death (the separation of the soul from God). The preceding verse refers to eternal life (spiritual life) and, consequently, to an everlasting death—also spiritual (Matthew 25:41, II Thessalonians 1:8-9).

When the body dies (physically), the individual experiences the first death. Following the judgment of the lost, the individual experiences the second death.

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

If you pay what you owe as a sinner, you must spend eternity in the lake of fire (hell), separated from God. Do not reject the truth and remain unrepentant.

Third, you must understand . . . what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for you.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The Lord Jesus Christ was not a sinner, yet He suffered death and separation from God the Father on the cross. The Bible says He did this for us!

Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

The Lord was buried and three days later arose from the grave. Why was this necessary? God requires payment for sin. The Lord Jesus Christ paid your debt and mine. He took responsibility for all of our sins while hanging on the cross (II Corinthians 5:21), and God punished Him in our place to satisfy the debt that we owe (Acts 2:27, 31). Praise God!

God draws the sinner to Himself. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. (John 6:44) He offers the gift of eternal life through the death and blood shed by the Lord Jesus Christ. However, as with any gift, unless the receiver accepts the gift from the Giver, there is no benefit. This brings us to the fourth principle.

Fourth, you must understand . . . that by faith you need to accept what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for you.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?. . .

To call upon the name of the Lord, you must believe in Him. You cannot just believe on a mental or intellectual level. The word believe means to trust; to depend upon; to rely on. The act of believing involves a turning to Christ. A necessary complement to a true belief in Christ is repentance, for the Lord said, “Nay; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3).

Repentance and belief are the two sides of a single coin. To repent is to turn from something. You must turn from believing and trusting in your own efforts, church membership or your own religion. You must turn to believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance is not the lost sinner’s promising to clean up his life in exchange for salvation. It is certainly not contingent upon the promise of some future behavior. (See the in-depth discussion on repentance at the end of this chapter.)

The choice is now yours. You must either accept or reject the gift of God. There is no middle ground. Either you believe or you believe not. To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ is to accept the facts that you are a sinner; that you owe the sin penalty; and that the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the debt you owe. Believing on the Lord Jesus Christ means placing the matter of your eternal life in His hands, and not attempting to add anything to His complete and perfect salvation.

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

If you continue in unbelief, you are condemned because you must believe in order to be saved. You can choose to change your eternal destination today. Once you have accepted Him as Saviour, the peace and assurance of knowing that you have eternal life is yours.

1 Timothy 1:16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

If God is dealing with you about the matter of salvation, please take time right now to put your belief and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour.

If you have never before made a true profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we would like to hear from you. Please take time right now to contact the publisher or the author of this book that we may rejoice with you. We will also send you some additional information to enable you to live a victorious Christian life. The Lord Jesus Christ indicated that salvation is only the beginning when He spoke the following words:

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

The Lord Jesus Christ wants you to be saved (to have life). Once you are saved, He wants you to serve Him (that is, to have life more abundantly). You cannot serve without salvation; you cannot have salvation without accepting His payment for your sin. If you would like more information or further study materials, contact the author or publisher for a list of other materials available including a verse by verse study of the scripture.

Appendix D
Age of Readiness--Distinctive Parts

Readiness consists of three distinct components: repentance from sin, acceptance of Christ’s fulfillment, and endurance. (Again, this embodies repentance, belief, and obedience.)

1.   Repentance from sin.

Matthew 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

2.   Acceptance of Christ’s fulfillment, in child-like innocence.

Mark 10:14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

3.   Endurance.

Matthew 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Matthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Mark 13:13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Endurance consists of at least four main attributes. These are productivity, purity, personal abasement, and perseverance.

A. Productivity (proper fruits) . . .

Matthew 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: 9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

John 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

B.   Purity . . .

Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

C.   Personal abasement . . .

No one is to have authority over another. Everyone is to be a minister.

Matthew 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

The true servant from the heart is the greatest. Humility is a key ingredient.

Matthew 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Exaltation comes from self-abasement and placing yourself last of all.

Mark 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Even the poor were to be elevated.

Mark 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

Everything was to be sacrificed to be ready for the kingdom. This command included the sacrifice of houses and families, too.

Mark 10:29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, 30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. 31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

Age and position receive no special recognition during this age.

Luke 22:25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

D.  Perseverance . . .

The saint was to wait for the Lord and to be ready to open unto Him immediately upon His return. All believers were to be watching and ready, doing the things God expected of them.

Luke 12:35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning 36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching . . . 40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. . . . 43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. 45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; 46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

Luke 21:19 In your patience possess ye your souls.

. . . in and because of love.

Luke 6:27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. 30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

John 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Jude 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Endurance will be tested and proven by temptation and tribulation, culminating in the Great Tribulation – a process whereby God Himself will restore righteousness on earth.

Temptation:

Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Luke 22:28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.

Tribulation:

Matthew 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Matthew 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

Mark 13:19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

Luke 21:12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.

Great Tribulation:

Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

God will restore righteousness on the earth.

Restoration:

Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Believers were expected to rejoice in the testing and proving process because it was intended by God to purify and perfect their readiness. (The same may be said in reference to the reinstitution of the Readiness Age after the Church Age.)

Acts 5:41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

I Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

Tribulation was (and will be) the believer’s way of identifying with Christ…

Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

…rather than shaming Him and being rejected.

Luke 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

Hebrews 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Though believers were not given the Holy Spirit until Christ was glorified, they knew they would be given the Holy Spirit like the Old Testament saints under the law.

John 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

I Peter 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

Hebrews 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

I John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

I John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

Just like the Old Testament saint, these believers knew they could lose the Holy Spirit too. If they chose to abide in the Lord (John 15:4-5), no man could pluck them out of His hand (John 10:28-29). However, God could and would cast them out of His hand if they did not abide in Him and bear fruit (John 15:1, 6). This clearly indicates a huge difference in the matter of one’s faith being effectual for life during this Age of Readiness. The criteria no longer was (or will be) “the just shall live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:4). It changed to:

Hebrews 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

The issue of repentance changes from the first period to the reinstatement of the Age of Readiness. Initially, in the Age of Readiness (during the first period prior to the Church Age), repentance could be repeated.

Acts 8:22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

Peter rebukes Simon, telling him to repent. This occurs after Simon is saved as indicated by verses found prior to the command to repent (verse 22 and verse 13).

Acts 8:13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

However, in the latter part of the Age of Readiness, there will come an offense from which one cannot repent.

I John 5:11 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

During the second part of the Age of Readiness, the Mark of the Beast will be that sin unto death. It will only be “available” during the Tribulation period. Satan, the great imitator, will devise and implement his own imitation of the seal of the Holy Spirit. Unlike the seal of the Holy Spirit which guarantees heaven for the bearer (during the Church Age), the seal of Satan will guarantee an eternity in hell for the bearer.

Revelation 14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

The Age of Readiness has two distinct periods. As demonstrated, certain aspects of God’s expectations/requirements apply to one part, but not the other. The Mark of the Beast is one example. The student must recognize the fact that the Mark applies to the second portion of the Age of Readiness, but not to the first.
